THE PRINT

Banksy produced this iconic work in Woodside, Queens during his month long self titled New York residency, where he produced 30 pieces of art in the span of a month. The quote is taken from Maximus in the film Gladiator, which is a variation of the original by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and philosopher who said “What we do now echoes in eternity.” The details of the artwork are humorous in that it showcases how graffiti art, by definition, is meant to be ephemeral, and is hence a self-reflection of how Bristol born artist Banksy’s own work, becomes subject to cleaning up, as he is essentially defacing the surfaces he works with, ensuring that his work is never truly meant to be kept around forever.
